Who’s In & Who’s Out for X-Men: Apocalypse?

X-Men: Days of Future Past was so good that when I watched it the second time, it was EVEN BETTER. I’m not talking about it being just a really good comic book film (read our review), but a really good film in general. I plan on watching X-Men: Days of Future Past at least one more time and cannot wait for the next installment, X-Men: Apocalypse. It was great seeing the X-Men franchise finally join the comic book movie trend of having a post credits scene that teases audiences of what to come. For those wondering who that mutant was in the end credits scene (SPOILER), it was the ultimate villain in the X-Men universe himself, Apocalypse. He may not have looked intimidating during that sequence, but once he reaches his full potential then it’s bad new bears.

Like always, after watching a great comic book film I went on the internet to read stories that speculated on what we could see in the next installment. We already knew a couple months ago that the next film in the X-Men franchise would feature the subtitled character Apocalypse, courtesy of Director Bryan Singer on his twitter. So it wasn’t too surprising (still awesome) to see the character in the post credits. More recently, ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ writer/producer Simon Kimberg has dropped hints about ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’. Kimberg described the Apocalypse as a disaster film, meaning the X-Men and company are in for a world of trouble. Also, Kimberg said that Apocalypse will give fans a more clearer understanding of the events between Days of Future Past and X-Men 1, and for that matter the franchise’s timeline in general which has been a simplified (see below).

As great as this explanation is, there are still questions that us fans are asking.

SPOILERS on Days of Future Past BELOW!

I have to admit that I got a bit of nostalgia when I saw the entire original cast at the end of Days of Future Past. I was a kid when X-Men 1 released in theaters and hated what they did in X-Men: The Last Stand. Seeing Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Rogue, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Colossus, Kitty Pryde, Beast and Prof. Xavier was a perfect ending (no Alan Cunning as Nightcrawler). According to writer/producer Simon Kimberg, it was designed as a final goodbye for the original cast. That was the vibe I got when watching that scene and at the same time was hoping that wasn’t the case. As much as I like the 70’s cast in Days of Future Past, the future X-Men scenes were on another level. I wanted to see more of the original cast, especially after seeing Director Bryan Singer have them work as a team. Fortunately for myself and fans who feel as I do, the whole “farewell send off for the original cast” is something writer/producer Simon Kimberg has said before during X-Men: The Last Stand.  More recently, Kimberg has stated that X-Men: Apocalypse, which takes place in the 80’s, will focus on the First Class cast, but will certainly involve some of the original cast as well. YES!!!!

Now before I get too hyper about Kimberg’s words, let’s see who we are likely to see from the original cast. It’s a given Wolverine will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse. The franchise star has expressed interest in doing more films with excitement after seeing the finished product of X-Men: Days of Future Past. There has been reports of Fox looking to recast a younger Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm. That means James Marsden, Famke Janssen, and Halle Berry are probably limited small roles if time travel is to be involved in the film. Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart are likely done. I really got that vibe when they shook hands during the future sentinel invasion. But, if time travel is a factor we could very well see them again in limited roles. Out the remaining characters: Colossus, Iceman, Rogue, and Kitty Pryde. It’s really tough to say. You cannot do younger versions of these characters, except maybe Colossus. If Rogue is brought back in the future scenes, then please give her actual powers and make her fly this time.

On a side note, if Sabretooth is making a return for X-Men: Apocalypse I hope they bring back Liev Schreiber. He was great, they could have him join the First Class cast, and is the one thing Singer/Kimberg should not ignore from X-Men: Origins Wolverine. Anyways…

The recent news of Channing Tatum being cast as Gambit means we could see him introduced in Apocalypse. Kimberg has stated Fox really wants to get the Gambit character involved in the franchise. Fox has confirmed that Quicksilver will be back, also bringing back Nightcrawler as a younger version.

If you take a look at the X-Men timeline above, you’ll notice X-Men: Apocalypse take up a huge amount of space in the new timeline. The “disastrous” events will heavily effect X-Men 1,2, and 3. If anything, don’t we already have a clue of who makes it out of Apocalypse based on who we saw in the final scene of X-Men: Days of Future Past? A counter argument to that would be if time travel is involved in Apocalypse, whatever Prof. X explains to Wolverine about the last 50 years and the X-Men we saw in the mansion could not even matter. Maybe Cable appears in X-Men: Apocalypse and informs the group that Wolverine has to go back again and help the 80’s cast defeat Apocalypse. Who knows really? Simon Kimberg definitely left holes in the new X-Men canon intentionally to make us all talk and speculate about what could happen next. Smart move Mr. Kimberg!
